Charlie and the Penny Black - Charlie wins Penny Black at Salisbury
Charlie Whitworth, aged 8, from Salisbury, was the winner of the Penny Black from a free draw for young collectors visiting the Stamp Active stand at the Salisbury Collectors Fair in May. The Penny Black was generously donated by Dauwalder’s of Salisbury, the organisers of the popular two day event. All youngsters received a free goodie bag and other gifts at the show. Although not large in number, the children were enthusiastic and excited about their visit as they hunted for items for their collections. Once again, the most popular collecting area appeared to be “Animals” with “Chickens” and “Cats” amongst the varied range of topics.
Further to the above Press release SAN now have a write-up of the event in Charlie's own words, together with a photo of a shy young Charlie – see below.
(Charlie and his dad are quite happy for both of these to be used)
Salisbury collector’s fair 2018
I had a great time at the Salisbury collector’s fair at the town hall. It was a surprise winning the penny black; it can go with my penny red and the rest of my small collection with about 600 stamps worldwide. I also have a 50p collection which only has a few missing. I sort my stamps into categories (space, transport, birds, small ones, sports and bigger ones). How do other people organise their collection? The goody bag I was given from stamp active was awesome, it came with books, first day covers, a stamp finder’s dictionary and much more good stuff. I recommend this to all keen collectors and people who are interested in stamps and coins.
From Charlie.
Thanks to Dauwalder’s for their sponsorship of the Stamp Active stand and donation of the Penny Black.

Stamp Active organised competitions.
Those of us, who have been involved in school clubs who have submitted entries in the past, know how much enjoyment can be gained from helping the children put together an entry for a competition, and how much satisfaction the child gets when they see what they can do.
The basic competition – “My Favourite Things” – is a one page introductory competition for primary school level, and, by its title, gives the children great scope to choose almost any topic that interests them, and with only one page to complete, does not require a great deal of material or writing up. It is an ideal starter level to give the children the experience of selecting material on a topic and deciding how to present it in a reasoned fashion. This competition has three age-related classes.
The next step is the Stamp Active Competition which we are now running twice a year, at both Spring and Autumn Stampex. This covers children up to 16 years of age, but accepts entries of a minimum of 4 pages (up to 24 pages). For this competition the subject matter is only limited by the child’s imagination, and they can submit whatever theme, country or idea that they choose. As the rules say – it is judged on presentation and originality. There are 4 different age-related classes.
The final level is the British Youth Championships, open for anyone up to the age of 21, and with a minimum entry requirement of 16 sheets. This is for the more experienced collector who has progressed through the other competitions, though there is no lower age limit and the five classes start at the under 12s.
Full details of all the competitions are in the Competition section of the Stamp Active web page, with the full rules, entry forms for printing off, and also examples of previous winning entries for the children to examine.
All our competitions are generously backed by our sponsors –
So please encourage children to enter these competitions to see how rewarding it can be both for the children and yourself to help them to realise their potential and broaden their collecting horizons. Entry to these competitions has led in the past to participation at international level and the youngsters do not know how far they can go until they try.
